Fruits and Vegetables: Organic vs. Conventional

Organic foods are more popular than ever. From organic fruits and vegetables to farm-raised meat and wild fish, there are lots of products available on the market. Still, many people are questioning the nutritional quality of organic versus conventional foods. Are organic fruits and veggies worth the extra money? Can they really improve your health?

When Buying Organic Does Make Sense

According to the Dirty Dozen Plus, many common fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of pesticides. If you care about your health, you should only buy their organic versions. The Dirty Dozen Plus is an annual report published by the Environmental Working Group. This organization ranks produce by its pesticide load. The top offenders get listed on the Dirty Dozen Plus.

This year’s list includes the following fruits and veggies:

  • Apples
  • Nectarines
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries
  • Peaches
  • Celery
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Imported peas
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Spinach
  • Blueberries
  • Peppers

The last two foods on this list, blueberries and hot peppers, are considered extremely toxic due to their high content of insecticides. The chemicals in these fruits and vegetables are toxic to the nervous system and may cause deadly diseases. Even if you can’t afford to buy only organic foods, you should at least get those on this list in their organic form.

Is Conventionally Grown Food That Bad?

Organic fruits and vegetables are much healthier than conventional produce. An overwhelming number of studies have proven the health benefits of organic food. Conventionally grown products are loaded with harmful chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects, Parkinson’s disease, brain damage, hormonal imbalances, and chronic diseases.

Going organic is one of the best things you can do for your health. After a few weeks, you’ll have more energy and vitality. Organic fruits and vegetables promote weight loss, strengthen your immunity, and slow down aging.
